How to handle a losing streak in trading

6 min read · Updated 19 Oct 2026 · By the VOLERON team

Every trader has losing streaks, including profitable ones. The question isn't how to avoid them. It's how to tell a normal streak from a real problem, and how to get through it without making it worse.

Losing streaks are normal (here's the maths)

Even a strategy that wins half the time will string several losses together regularly. Over hundreds of trades, streaks that look shocking turn up as a matter of course:

Win rateChance of 5 losses in a row on any given run of 5 trades
60%1%
50%3.1%
40%7.8%

Those percentages look small, but across 300 trades you get hundreds of five-trade stretches. At a 40% win rate, a streak of 5 or more losses is close to certain at some point.

Normal streak or broken strategy?

Ask your journal three questions:

  1. Did I follow my plan on these trades? If not, it's a discipline problem, not a strategy problem.
  2. Are the losses −1R? If losses are getting bigger than planned, you're moving stops or sizing up.
  3. Is this streak outside my history? Compare it to your longest streak over your last 100 trades. Inside that range is normal.

If you followed the plan, losses are −1R and the streak is within your history, it's variance. Keep going, smaller. If any answer is no, fix that first.

What to do during a losing streak

What not to do

Plan for streaks before they happen

Write your streak rules into your trading plan now, while you're calm. For example: "After 3 losses in a row, half size. After a 5R drawdown, A+ setups only. After a 10R drawdown, stop and review for two days." When the streak arrives, you don't have to decide anything. You follow the rule.

Know your numbers: your journal can show your longest losing streak and your max drawdown. Knowing "I've had 7 losses in a row before and still finished the month up" makes streak number 6 much easier to sit through.

Frequently asked questions

Is a losing streak normal in trading?

Yes. Even profitable strategies have regular losing streaks. At a 40–50% win rate, five or more losses in a row is expected at some point over a few hundred trades.

Should I stop trading during a losing streak?

Not necessarily. Reduce size, stick to your best setup and keep your daily stop. Take a break if frustration is affecting your decisions.

How do I know if my strategy stopped working?

Check whether you followed your plan, whether losses stayed at −1R, and whether the streak is longer than any in your recent history. If all three look normal, it is likely variance.

How much should I reduce size after losses?

A common rule is to halve risk after three consecutive losses and return to full size after a winning day.
