Futures like gold, Nasdaq and S&P trade nearly 24 hours a day on weekdays, but they don't behave the same way all day. Volume, volatility and the kind of moves you see change a lot between sessions. The best time to trade isn't universal. It's the session where your setups work.
The three main sessions
Times below are approximate and shown in US Eastern Time (ET). Convert to your local time, and remember daylight-saving changes shift them during the year.
| Session | Rough hours (ET) | Typical character |
|---|---|---|
| Asia (Tokyo) | ~7pm – 4am | Often quieter, more range-bound. Some markets trend steadily |
| London | ~3am – 12pm | Volume picks up. Breakouts from the Asia range are common |
| New York | ~8am – 5pm (stocks open 9:30am) | Highest volume for US index futures, big moves around the open and news |
The overlap between London and New York is usually the busiest part of the day. Major economic releases (like US inflation or jobs data) can cause sharp moves at specific times.
Why your best session is personal
- Your setups suit certain conditions. Breakout traders often do well around opens. Range traders may prefer quieter hours.
- Your focus changes. Trading the New York open at midnight in Australia is very different from trading it at 9:30am in New York.
- Your instrument matters. Gold and Nasdaq don't peak in activity at exactly the same times.

- Tag every trade with its session in your journal.
- After 50+ trades, compare P&L, win rate and expectancy by session.
- Go one step further: compare each setup by session. A breakout might be strongly positive in London and negative in Asia.
- Look at your losing days. Do they cluster in one session?
Make a session rule
Once the data is clear, turn it into a rule: "I trade London only" or "No trades after 11am ET". It also helps fix overtrading, because the platform is closed when your edge isn't there.
